Royal Baltina makes 100% teff packed and ready to mix teff flour. Royal teff products are packed with 5, 10 and 25kgs and are in affordable prices. These sizes were chosen to make it convenient for people living alone and with small family sizes. Further, the ready to mix concept is to ease people’s busy lives. Most people like to mix teff with other edible flour ingredients in their houses before they mix the teff flour with water, some people do it to be economical and some mix it to get the best nutrition out of it but we decided to give that choice to the people.

They can buy the full teff from us and buy whatever flour they wish to mix it with and create their own kind of injera. We hope to give relief to parents with kids who have gluten allergy and that’s why both our white and red teff and our upcoming sorghum products are delicately handled and freshly packed. We carefully manage our process and have dedicated teff milling sites in order to be sensitive to people with gluten allergy.

What is Teff

Teff is a small, gluten-free grain with a long list of health benefits. It’s a species of lovegrass native to Ethiopia, where it’s an important grain and used to make injera.

Between 8,000 and 5,000 B.C., the people of the Ethiopian highlands were among the first to domesticate plants and animals for food, and teff was one of the earliest plants domesticated. Teff is grown by over six million farming households in Ethiopia. Teff is believed to originate in Ethiopia and Eritrea between 4,000 B.C. and 1,000 B.C.

The grain is gaining popularity internationally lately because of its gluten-free option that boasts a number of health benefits. It’s known to naturally balance hormone levels, boost immunity, stimulate digestion, strengthen bones, and promote cardiovascular health and aid weight loss.

Our Story

My name is Kalkidan belete, I am 24 years old.  I finished my high school at Nazareth school and received my bachelor’s degree from Addis Ababa University, school of Journalism and Communications. I am currently doing my second degree in Business Administration from University of South Africa.

A few months ago my dad showed me an article on Capital newspaper about fifteen people who got arrested for mixing Teff flour with gravel, sawdust and other cereal waste products and baked injera using unpurified flour and I thought to myself, how can somebody be sure of what they are buying if there is no company to take responsibility for its actions? We all buy Teff from the Traditional grinding houses (Wefcho Bet) but who can you hold accountable? Then continued to question how does the modern person buy Teff? Where is the labelling? Does any producer ever follow the good manufacturing practices, monitors the production environment and test the finished flour?


Our big idea is to introduce products that are transparent and promote health consciousness.

Royal also aims to introduce different Teff mixtures with other grains to increase the nutritious content of the Injera we eat while making it more affordable.
